Tuttlingen, 06.10.2020: To ensure the best possible medical care, Finland’s largest healthcare provider HUS decided to invest in its comprehensive renovation and construction program: In cooperation with KARL STORZ, more than 40 operating theatres distributed among four hospitals will be equipped with the OR1 integration solutions and modernized by 2023. Finland is a pioneer in healthcare and is divided into 20 hospital districts. The largest is the Helsinki and Uusimaa Hospital District (HUS), which is composed of 24 member municipalities and 23 hospitals. HUS represents the second largest employer in Finland and is responsible for the treatment of severe and rare diseases requiring special expertise and technology.

“For the implementation of the complex refurbishment and construction project, HUS used a public tender to find a reliable and experienced partner meeting its technical requirements for innovative and workflow-based operating theatres. Due to the vast hospital district and the services provided to different geographical regions, remote consultation and communication is of utmost importance. HUS placed the greatest value on a future-proof and expandable integration solution which, in addition to optimal ergonomics for the operating team, puts patient safety first. We are therefore very pleased that KARL STORZ convinced with the IP-based product OR1 NEO® to realize this remarkable project”, says Michael Moberg, Country Manager of KARL STORZ Finland.

The OR1 NEO® integration solution enables high flexibility within the opearating theatre: Its modular construction allows easy adaptation to individual requirements, 4K UHD monitors with picture-in-picture display and low latency ensure the best visibility of the operating field, and secure audio/video communication enables the consultation of expert opinions. With its intuitive, workflow-based user interfaces comprising documentation and routing functions, OR1 NEO® also contributes to an efficient operation procedure. This is additionally supported by the expandable app-platform SCENARA®, which, amongst other benefits, allows cybersecure und privacy compliant access to endoscopic video data anywhere and anytime.

The first OR installations will be completed at the Park Hospital by 2021. Additional operating theatres will be updated in the Jorvi and Bridge Hospital by 2022, followed by installations at the Oak Hospital in 2023.

This comprehensive project is outstanding for both HUS and KARL STORZ. “We are very excited to work with this highly innovative and advanced healthcare provider and to have the opportunity to modernize many of the hospitals’ operating theatres in the southern part of Finland”, says Michael Moberg.
