Tuttlingen – The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University Hospital of Tübingen in Germany is pleased to announce the world’s first installation of the OR1 X Pro, a state-of-the-art operating room from KARL STORZ. The installation marks an important milestone, elevating the hospital’s capabilities to a new level of digitally networked, efficient, and future-proof surgical processes. Shortly after the handover, the first procedures were successfully performed, confirming the system’s level of maturity. Both the hospital staff and the surgical team in Tübingen are highly satisfied and welcome the significant progress the new installation brings to their daily work.

Networked infrastructure for greater efficiency and precision

The new operating room in Tübingen combines high-performance 4K imaging infrastructure with an ergonomically optimized room design, significantly streamlining clinical workflows. Ceiling-mounted monitors provide crystal-clear visualization of the body’s interior, while the wall-mounted screen enables quick access to clinical information systems and intuitive control of surgical technology. The modern user interface and fully integrated solution create a calm, natural, and highly functional work environment, a real step forward for more efficient workflows and simplified processes. Training the surgical teams at the clinic was remarkably straightforward, thanks in part to the well-designed user guidance. A key reason for this was the early involvement of medical users, resulting in a solution that meets the practical demands of daily surgical practice.

Documentation reimagined

The new generation of systems enables continuous automatic recording and the subsequent analysis of surgical procedures, as a modern operating room has long become a valuable source of data. It lays the groundwork for further training of existing Artificial Intelligence (AI) models and for the timely integration of additional AI-supported systems into the state-of-the-art operating room environment. This enhances documentation, quality assurance, and teaching in equal measure—already fully usable today and prepared for future AI functions that will automate routine tasks and provide lasting relief for surgical teams. Professor Sara Y. Brucker, Medical Director of the Women’s Clinic, emphasized the high importance of the installation during the inauguration: “For us, the new operating room represents a true milestone. The highly integrated and digitally connected infrastructure significantly streamlines our workflows and helps us provide efficient care to our patients. The benefits of the system became clear right from the first procedures performed in the new environment.” The Tuttlingen-based medical technology company also highlighted the successful installation. “The implementation of our OR1 X Pro in Tübingen impressively demonstrates the potential that modern OR integration can unlock,” said Stefan Ort, Chief Operating Officer at KARL STORZ. “Together with the team at the Women’s Clinic, we have succeeded in creating an environment that combines technological innovation with clinical practicality. I am particularly pleased that the new digital workflows offer immediate, tangible added value for the entire surgical team.”

Looking to the future—a new user experience

With the new OR1 integration platform, KARL STORZ reinforces its role as an innovation partner for surgery and the healthcare sector: more connected, intuitive, and efficient than ever before. And with the built-in NVIDIA® GPU high-performance chip, the operating room is not only designed for today but also equipped for tomorrow. While the new solution will be officially available throughout Europe from mid-June, the teams in Tübingen are already gaining valuable experience in everyday clinical practice and actively utilizing the new capabilities. Several state-of-the-art operating rooms are already scheduled to be installed in Norway. KARL STORZ is pursuing a clear goal: to improve the lives of patients worldwide.
