If there were a single central theme of the work of the KARL STORZ company, it certainly would be our effort to supply the perfect image. To fulfill physicians’ centuries-old dream of viewing images from the inside of the body, Karl Storz presented solutions as early as the 1960s that still represent the gold standard of endoscopic image transmission.
But however brilliant the image produced with the HOPKINS® telescope and cold light source was – physicians soon wanted more: To move away from the "single eye system" an image only accessible to the individual endoscopist, and toward photos, film, and videos as well as the documentation and exchange of the viewed information. The associated solutions created by KARL STORZ throughout the past six decades – from the extracorporeal electronic flash of the 1950s to today’s medical 3D system – each stood for the best available technology of its time.
We recognized the potential of HD technology for medical diagnostics and treatment at a particularly early time and implemented at the highest quality standard – FULL HD – from the very beginning. This technology is complex, but physicians benefit in various ways. More image detail, greater sharpness, more brilliant colors, and much better ergonomics ensure a true qualitative breakthrough in modern endoscopy. Innovative visualization technologies grouped under the name IMAGE1 S™ offer the surgeon additional improvements. They allow homogeneous illumination of the endoscopic image, contrast enhancement, or tissue differentiation through color shifting.
However, estimating the spatial dimensions on a two-dimensional image remains difficult, even at the highest resolution. This problem is remedied by 3D technology, which KARL STORZ brings to the OR with our own technological approach that combines excellent image quality with extraordinary depth perception.
