DICOM is the abbreviation for Digital Imaging and Communication in Medicine. DICOM is a worldwide open standard for the exchange of medical images and image-related information (patient data, work lists, information on treatment and patient reports) between different computer-based systems and network applications or physical storage media (DICOM, HL7, IHE) in health care.
Improving the efficiency and quality of medical care is closely associated with advancing the data-related communication and cooperation within and between health care facilities.
The international communications standard HL7 (Health Level 7), which was specifically developed for the health care field, permits the communication and cooperation between almost all institutions and areas of health care.
The DICOM standard is supported and improved by the IHE (Integrated Healthcare Environment) Initiative, which describes the recommended behavior of systems and applications that are integrated in complex processes.
