Pocket-Sized Laryngoscope Includes a Small Adjustable LCD Monitor on the Handle
EL SEGUNDO, CA (February 14, 2013) – KARL STORZ Endoscopy-America, Inc., a leader in endoscopy and operating room integration solutions, is pleased to announce that its C-MAC® Pocket Monitor was selected as one of EMS World magazine’s Top 20 Innovations for 2012 during the recent EMS World Expo in New Orleans. Products that receive the award are described by the publication as representing the leading technology, engineering and creativity in the emergency medical service (EMS) industry. The 2012 award winners were chosen by industry expert and EMS World magazine editorial advisory board member, Mike Smith, BS, MICP. The new C-MAC® Pocket Monitor from KARL STORZ combines the convenience and utility of direct laryngoscopy with the many advantages of a video laryngoscope. Though small enough to fit in a pocket, the portable video laryngoscope has a small LCD monitor mounted on the handle. The adjustable screen pivots along two planes for optimum viewing and folds to the side of the laryngoscope for convenient transport and storage. The C-MAC® Pocket Monitor is designed for use where portability and a compact design are essential, including intubations performed by personnel in ground and air emergency medical service, tactical medicine and combat casualty care, as well as for use by hospital call teams.

The bright 2.4-inch monitor provides a high-contrast image, even in direct sunlight, as well as a side view angle of 80 degrees. Direct line of sight when using the monitor allows simultaneous viewing of both the patient and the monitor. The rechargeable lithium-ion battery provides one hour of continuous use and can be recharged in two hours. The C-MAC® Pocket Monitor offers virtually no learning curve by using standard Macintosh and Miller blades for adults through neonates, and the dBLADE® version intended for patients with exceptionally anterior airways.
Describing his first impression of the C-MAC® Pocket Monitor, EMS World’s Mike Smith said, “I couldn’t help but notice that the product I was going to see at the KARL STORZ booth was lying submerged in a bowl of water, where it remained for three days. I think that’s pretty remarkable since it is a laryngoscope with a video monitor.” The device in fact conforms to the International Protection Rating IPX8, which classifies the level of protection provided against the intrusion of water in electrical enclosures.
