Taking a Smear

Cytobrush

Smears are taken by various instruments.

Different instruments such as swab, brush, or spatule are used to harvest representative cellular material from the uterine cervix. Ecto- and endocervical cells are collected and are spread on the glass slide. The material must be fixed immediately using for instance 95% alcohol and should not be air dried. Here a cytobrush is used.
