CUSCHIERI ROTAGRIP Needle Holder

An ergonomic and comfortable handle is essential especially during long and complicated laparoscopic interventions. Particularly during intracorporeal suturing the surgeon has to rely on a precise and securely manageable instrument. In order to make the suturing process as comfortable as possible for the surgeon, KARL STORZ developed in cooperation with Professor Sir Alfred Cuschieri a needle holder with a revolving handle design.

This feature allows a relaxation of hand muscles, while a perfect allocation of force distribution is guaranteed. In order to meet all the hygienic criteria, our revolving handle jacket is removable.

Special features:
  • Revolving handle design for adequate allocation of muscle constriction
  • Ergonomic and striated grip for better handling
  • Easy dismantling of the revolving handle jacket for adequate cleaning

The advantages and the special features of our new ROTAGRIP needle holder are described by Professor Sir Alfred Cuschieri as follows: “The ROTAGRIP needle holder for laparoscopic surgery has a pencil configuration, which means, the shaft and handle of the instrument are in line.

Its distinctive feature is, however, a novel actuation handle consisting of two parts, of which the lower one rotates medially through an arc of approximately 20° (Figure 2).

This has three ergonomic advantages comparing conventional systems:

  • Reduced hand grip as the two parts of the handle are closer to each other.
  • More secure and greater control due to the gripping force.
  • Reduced hand force exerted by the surgeon as he approximates by opposition movement of the thumb against the fingers to secure the needle and hence reduced strain on the small muscles of the hand during intracorporeal suturing.

The use of this instrument is completely intuitive. All the surgeon has to do is hold the instrument with the rotating arm of the handle against the fingers and the fixed arm against the volar aspect of the thumb. As he opposes the thumb to the fingers to activate the grasping, the lower (rotating jacket) automatically swings clockwise as the jaws of the needle holder close to grasp the needle. The standard choreography of coordinated movements is used for intracorporeal suturing (continuous, interrupted).”

We recommend using our ROTAGRIP needle holder with suturing material USP 2-0 to 6-0.
