Video Mediastinoscope acc. to LERUT

In 1959, Carlens succeeded for the first time in biopsying tissue from the mediastinum with a mediastinoscope. This procedure developed from a difficult method with a lot of complications to an intervention under visual control with low mortality and morbidity. Diagnostic sensitivity increased with monitor magnification and an anatomically correct dissection is possible. In contrast to other procedures, which only permit fine needle biopsy, video mediastinoscopy allows the elimination of entire lymph nodes or lymph node groups, thus making reliable staging possible. The originally hard to teach operative procedure of mediastinoscopy can now be taught very successfully to doctors in training using monitor magnification, as it easily enables several people to view and document the procedure at the same time.

Although many surgeons still prefer performing mediastinoscopies under direction vision, they appreciate the advantages of a video recording created during the procedure because the narrow working channel of a conventional mediastinoscope greatly limits observation by anyone other than the surgeon. The extremely compact DCI® technology of the video mediastinoscope according to LERUT now permits both of these options – i.e. connecting a video camera while working under direct vision. The camera module is fully integrated in the hand piece so that the surgeon is able to work unhindered, even during a recording.

An interesting addition to the already established instruments for Mediastinoscopy are the CLICKLINE MAHNES Biopsy Forceps with a unipolar coagulation connection and clip forceps for use with titanium clips.

The DVD KS 686 "Video-assisted Mediastinoscopy" by the authors Dr. A. Kirschbaum and Prof. Dr. B. Passlick as well as the Doctor-to-Doctor Manual of the same name are available for you to order from our media library.
