Pediatric surgeries at Kapi'olani medical center

CULVER CITY, California — KARL STORZ Endoscopy-America, Inc., a leader in endoscopic technology, announced that its advanced OR1™ integrated operating room system will be showcased during a live videoconference on May 6, 2004. The videoconference will be part of a live surgery course originating from the Kapi’olani Medical Center for Women & Children (Honolulu) and will be observed by participants at the International Pediatric Endosurgery Group’s (IPEG’s) 13th Annual Congress for Endosurgery in Children being held on Maui.

Daniel Robie, M.D., Medical Director for Pediatric Minimally Invasive Surgery at Kapi’olani and co-chair of the IPEG live surgery course, says as many as six different pediatric minimally invasive procedures will be performed during the live event. The procedure will be performed in the OR1™ facilities that opened in April at Kapi’olani, the first rooms fully equipped and dedicated from its inception for minimally invasive surgery. Robie says the procedures will demonstrate a range of advantages offered by the OR1™ technology. He explains that the system offers “better control for the surgeon over various aspects of the equipment, such as light settings, pressure settings, and placement and positioning of the monitor so there is better visualization.” Robie adds, “Ergonomically, I think it’s better and makes you more efficient, so you can get the procedure done more quickly and safely. And the room itself is all configured for these types of procedures.”.

The live surgery course is likely to give participants a valuable experience to take away. Says Robie, “There are six surgeons scheduled right now to perform these operations, including four from the mainland and two international. All are recognized leaders in the field of pediatric minimally invasive surgery. And participants are going to be able to see these experts do these operations and I think they are going to be able to take away some technical details that they can then include when performing the procedures back at their home hospitals. So I think it’s an advantage for them because they’ll probably be able to do it better as a result.”.

The new facilities at Kapi’olani are expected to yield exceptional patient outcomes, particularly within the pediatric patient populations. “One purpose driving any advance in medical technology is to offer a marked improvement in patient care,” says John Davis, director of marketing, KARL STORZ. “Improved patient outcomes are the key benefit derived from OR1™. That’s in addition to improvements in OR efficiency and better use of staff.”.

OR1™ surgical suites provide a fully integrated operating room environment for surgeons and O.R. staff. Using sophisticated electronic guidance systems, OR1™ provides centralized control of every component of the surgical suite, including overhead mounting systems, surgical lights, operating room tables, endoscopic equipment, cameras, video systems and documentation solutions.
