KARL STORZ unveils four millimeter BETTOCCHI hysteroscope system

CULVER CITY, California - KARL STORZ Endoscopy-America, Inc., a leader in diagnostic and operative endoscope technology, announces a new era in hysteroscopy with the unveiling of the new 4mm Bettocchi Hysteroscope System with a 5 Fr. (1.67mm) operating channel. Utilizing revolutionary 2mm HOPKINS® II rod lens technology, the new 4mm system provides brilliant and clear visualization of the entire uterine cavity. The new 2mm optical sys-tem provides minimally invasive uterine access, allowing the use of both 3.6mm diagnostic con-tinuous flow sheaths and 4.2mm therapeutic sheaths.

“Smaller sheath designs mean less dilatation and may reduce the need for the local cervical blocks that are often required with larger rigid hysteroscopes,” said Jay Houser, director of prod-uct marketing, KARL STORZ. “This represents a new era for performing true ‘minimal access’ surgery in the uterine cavity.”

The 4.2mm therapeutic sheath allows the introduction of 5 Fr. accessories such as the new KARL STORZ Biopsy Forceps (26160 UHW), providing almost twice as much tissue sampling than traditional 5 Fr. biopsy forceps. Since obtaining an adequate biopsy has been a problem with many other systems, this represents another significant advance.
Additional accessories include scissors along with bipolar and monopolar cautery devices. Therapeutic devices such as the Essure™ device (Conceptus, Inc.), which is pending FDA 510(k) approval for use in the United States, will also be fully compatible with the Bettocchi Hystero-scope System.

KARL STORZ also markets a 5mm Bettocchi therapeutic sheath, which remains at the vanguard of the company’s operative system for surgical use.

“The introduction of the 4mm Bettocchi System, which allows easier insertion and more patient comfort, will now facilitate the growing trend to perform diagnostic and therapeutic hysteroscopy in the office or minimally invasive outpatient surgery center,” said Houser.
The Bettocchi System has already become a standard in Europe and other parts of the world, in large part due to its unique oval sheath design that facilitates greater patient comfort.
